Common Name: Shortnosed Ponyfish (Leiognathus equulus) . Kekek in Malay.
Description: Flat, with a silvery
body. Emits a lot of mucus when landed and croaks when out of
water. Looks like a small pomfret at glance. Grows to a maximum
of 15cm, about the size of an adult palm. A good table fish but
does not have much flesh.Moves about in schools usually along
sheltered shorelines and estuaries where the water is clean and
clear.
Tips: Feeds on prawns and small fish.This fish is usually commercially caught using trawl nets. The fish however, offers a good sport when fished using ultralight tackle, of 2 lb line and No 13 hooks.
