I started tying clousers this way for spanish mackerel and albacore fishing a couple of years ago. I never thought it was different until a friend of mine pointed it out and dubbed it the Gordoclouser. I thought it was funny but he noticed that the way I tied the Flashabou in was different. Attach the flash for the tail and and leave an inch or so of flashabou pointing back towards the hook eye when you trim it off. Wrap the mono thread over the extra flash material on the hook shank. This will give the fly a silver stripe down the middle and keep it from fouling. Then tie your clouser in the standard method. So we now have a new variation on a classic!
Tie the belly of the fly with a light colored synthetic hair such as Ultrahair and then the back in either olive or any color you like. Most that I tie for albacore are olive and ones I tie for most other species are chartreuse or blue. Bonito really love them in blue
Tie the flies to the size of the predominant baitfish in your area. Most silversides are about the thickness of a mans finger. Tie them sparsely so you can trim them and make them into a smaller minnow if you need to. I like to use zap a gap for head cement. This keeps the dumbell from twisting on the hook shank. If you want to tie the Clouser this way for stripers then you should use natural bucktail. I think it is better for them and also bass than with Ultrahair.
