My Sewing Area

My Pfaff 7570 sewing and embroidery machine and Pfaff 756 serger are set up in the dining room. I can watch TV from there and close everything up neatly when I'm through.

Bibs
(6/00)
I bought a really fun embroidery card with Sesame Street characters on it, so I made up these bibs to try it out. I gave the bibs to my friend as a gift for her daughter's first birthday.

Little Dresses
(4/00)
I've been sewing up a storm! I am really hooked on making baby clothes because it's like making doll clothes but they are actually worn instead of just being used as decoration.

I made two little dresses with panties and a hat for my friend's baby. The one in pink is Daisy Kingdom fabric. I made the hat to go with it and attached an artifical flower to the brim. The dress is trimmed in lace and has three little heart shaped buttons on the back. The dress itself wasn't too difficult but the hat was a challenge! The pattern called for interfacing only the brim but I interfaced the band and top also because I thought it would be too floppy. This extra bulk made it a bit more cumbersome to sew, but I think it came out ok. The green and white striped dress is out of a seersucker fabric I bought online from Phoenix Textiles. I trimmed this one in ric-rac and used plain, white buttons.

Although the dresses are a bit big yet for Jenelle, my friend decided to dress her in the pink one for Easter. Click on the pictures to see a larger view.

March Mini-quilt:
(3/00)
I bought this pattern at a sewing and quilting expo I went to. Each little design is attached with fusible webbing. They were selling them as kits. There were 12, one for each month, and all you had to do was cut out each design from the fabric scraps they provided, fuse them on and quilt the top if you desired. However, the backing came already stitched together and I couldn't see paying $20 for the kit and hardly doing any work! They also sold just the patterns, so I bought all 12 with the idea of making one each month (yeah, right!!) and then adding a calendar panel to the bottom with days of the month that could be buttoned on in the appropriate places for that month. It'll be a long-term project and I'll have fun searching through my stash (and adding to it!) for just the right fabrics.  click to see larger picture

Fleece Sleeper and Teddy Bear:
(2/00)
Another baby outfit! I enjoy making baby clothes - it's practice for me and my friend likes the gifts. She expressed frustration over not being able to find warm fleece sleepers in size 6-9 months so I made one. The plaid was a challenge and I didn't quite get the sides to match up, but the front looks good! I used the leftover fleece to make a teddybear. I used a Carol's Zoo pattern that uses only 2 pattern pieces! These patterns are also available through McCall's. My friend liked the sleeper and matching bear so much she chose them for her daughter's portrait (I'll have to get a copy of one to see how she looked!).

Preemie Gown and Blanket:
(1/00)
I carpool with a co-worker who's wife gave birth at 31 weeks in early December. The little boy weighed only 2 lbs at birth but is doing well now. I made this preemie-sized gown and a flannel receiving blanket for them. The border of the blanket is stitched with a 9mm train stitch that I created on the computer.

Baby Reindeer Outfit:
(12/99)
I made this Christmas reindeer outfit for my friend's baby. It was a simple printed panel and was very easy to sew. Isn't she adorable at her first Christmas? click to see larger picture

Christmas Jacket:
(12/99)
I made this Christmas jacket for a friend for Christmas. I'm modeling it in the pictures. It is a pre-printed panel and sweatshirt. I followed the directions on the panel to cut the sweatshirt and sew on the fabric. It was really quite easy. I used the built-in blanket stitch on the machine to secure the hem and collar and they came out very nice. I also quilted the front with just simple straight stitch. My friend really liked it and planned to wear it Christmas day! Click to see a larger picture click to see larger picture click to see larger picture

Pokemon Bags:
(12/99)
I made these bags for my nephews and a niece for Christmas. I also made one for my hairdresser's son (in case you're wondering who Jordon is!). I downloaded the Pokemon embroidery designs from the internet and embroidered their names using Embroidery Magic (software for embroidering letters). The bags are just the right size for carrying their Pokemon card collections. I think they were a hit! Click on pictures for larger views

Fleece Baby Snowsuit:
(11/99)
This is a fleece winter coverup I made for my friend's daughter (isn't she cute!!!). The fleece is wonderfully soft. As you can see, there is an applique bear on the front and little bear ears on the hood. The hands and feet are snug and warm inside attached mittens and booties. There's a zipper down the front and snaps along the inside of the legs. Click to see a larger view.  click to see larger picture

Halloween Vest:
(9/99)
This is a Halloween vest I made from pre-printed panels. You can't see it in the picture, but I stuffed the witch's kettle, the moon, the scarecrow's hat and the pumpkins he's holding. I also used the decorative stitches on my machine to applique patches on the inside of the vest (can't see the ones on each side) and I stitched my name on the "made by" patch in the back. My First Quilt:
(8/99)
I finished piecing the quilt top I am working on. The fabrics are a rainforest theme and the pattern is called "Attic Windows." The next step is to pin it to the batting and back and then machine quilt. Click the picture to see a larger view. Click to see larger view of quilt

Baby Romper
(8/99)
I made a romper for my friend's baby. This was quite a learning project for me - I must have stitched, torn out, and re-stitched every seam. But I learned a lot and used both the serger and sewing machine. Click to see larger view of romper
