The world came to Moruya last weekend (17 - 18 Oct) as Moruya Scouts took
part in the 2nd World Jamboree of the Internet (JOTI 98).
The event was held in the lunch room of the Eurobodalla Shire Council
Moruya offices.
Organiser Louis Matti said "With 8 computers connected to the Internet,
Joeys and Cubs (aged 6 to 11) talked to scouts around the world".
"Then Scouts and Venturers aged 11 to 17 arrived for a night of fun,
new experiences".
"All 20 scouts talked using Internet Relay Chat, e-mail and browsing,
with contacts around the globe including Chile, Curacao Island, the Czech
Republic and Hong Kong, in total contacting over 40 different countries",
he said.
"Our scouts discovered the diversity of life in overseas countries,
the different views of people and the different customs around the world".
"Some scouts were even lucky enough to have a videoconference with
other scout groups in Chile and Luxembourg". Louis said that many
scouts are going to continue their friendships with children in other
countries by e-mail and letter writing.
Other activities over the weekend included the Join-in-Jamboree, for
groups who cannot make it to Chile for the 19th World Jamboree.
The Joeys, Cubs and Scouts did sand paintings, South American cooking
and found out about Chile.
