Dive # 250 | Date: June 4, 1998. | Location: Kelvin Grove |
Purpose: night | Access: shore | Weather: clear |
Water Temp: 51 F | Visibility: 15' | PSI Used: 1500 psi Nitrox 33 |
Max depth: 109 feet | Time: 45 minutes | Total Hours: 135:17 |
Comments: Nothing quite like the feeling of cold water trickling down a wrinkle in your neck seal - thank God for polypropelene! Saw a BIG octopus in the crack with the red brotula, who turned and started back at me as if to say "Get your light away from me!". Lots of quillbacks hiding in crevices, a juvenile yelloweye behind a sponge. Some big sponges, too, with squat lobsters peering out. Seapens everywhere, shimmering neon green when touched. Shrimp and prawns hopping, ronquils and gobies darting for cover and then peering warily back at me. A rock greenling I got so close to I think I could have kissed him. Another octopus, tucked under a rock overhang, less that excited to see me. A small ling, some kelp greenlings. Discovered a small octopus on the sand in 50 feet of water - he was maybe a foot across from tip to tip. Got him to swim a bit, watched him settle down and "land" in then typical umbrella fashion - always neat. Lots of tiny shrimp darting in my light, some jellies, and lots of crabs, sculpins, and tubesnouts as we crawled through the shallow rocks.

Comments: What a GREAT dive! Down Burma Road 'til we ran out of line - managed to get back this time without getting anyone tangled up in the line! :-) Went in the wheelhouse and up a flight of stairs, then out and along the ship. Back in a doorway in the front, through a couple of rooms, and out up the top deck. Lots of plumose living inside the ship, and lots of current to deal with. Swimming scallops everywhere! Watched a group of shrimp eating a scallop as we waited for Karli at the bottom of the line. Saw Dall's porpoises on the boat ride home - swimming in the wake and up alongside the boat, as well as seals everywhere....
Dive # 248 | Date: May 31, 1998. | Location: HMCS MacKenzie |
Purpose: wreck | Access: boat | Weather: sunny |
Water Temp: 51 F | Visibility: 20' | PSI Used: 2100 psi Nitrox 32 |
Max depth: 81 feet | Time: 42 minutes | Total Hours: 133:57 |
Comments: Did a little penetration with the reel - down Burma Road and into Radio 2, where all the knobs and switches are frozen tight (yes, I definitely tried to flip them!). Turned around - area too small for all 4 of us - so Karli had to back out... created quite the silt-out! But that's why we had the line.... Silt so bad I ran smack-dab with my mask into the corner of a wall and still didn't see it... :-) But we got turned around and past it just fine, and everything was good again. Lots of openings to get out anyways. Then swam up to the front and in, through a couple of rooms and out the side, part way down the ship. Starting to run out of ND time, so we headed slowly back to the line and up, both of us somewhat reluctant to surface! On the boat ride over, saw lots of porpoises swimming, and a pod of killer whales, but I couldn't convince them to come dive with us, despite my best attempts... :-) GREAT diving - nothing but the best!

Comments: Wow.... a ling at Cates! :-) Swam out to the pipes, cruised around, not really too much vis out there. Saw a prickleback on the swim back in, and a gunnel just as we got out. Rescued him - he was caught in the rocks, so I picked him up and put him in deeper water, where he wiggled off happily...
