1. The Lyke Wake is a 40 mile crossing of the North Yorkshire Moors from Scarth Wood Moor, Osmotherley to the coast at Ravenscar, which has to be completed in 24 hours for membership of the Lyke Wake Club. Cycle and horse crossings are not allowed, 24 hours of daylight time are allowed for ski crossings. For all practical purposes the walk starts from the car park at the eastern end of the reservoir, the first past the cattle grid from Osmotherley (SE468993) and finishes at Beacon Howe (NZ969012) or vice versa.
2. There is no question of closing the Lyke Wake Walk except during times of great fire risk, but there has been much damage to the central peaty sections by large numbers of walkers and we are co-operating with the National Park in asking parties to be kept small, and for large sponsored walks to go elsewhere, such as the other walks detailed in the book ‘Lyke Wake Walk and the Lyke Wake Way'; available from the club office. (See publications for details).
3. Remember, always have a central telephone number for people and support groups who get lost to report to. In winter only go with experienced well equipped walkers. The local rescue team have wasted much time and money looking for people who were not lost.
4. Please do not make any noise near dwelling houses, or deposit any litter whatsoever on the moor. Please ensure your support party are aware. Leave litter and your entire party will be disbarred from registering the crossing.
5. Cafes and hotels find difficulty in dealing with large parties of walkers, large rucksacks and muddy boots - be warned and be considerate.
6. Camping and accommodation are generally available, most local inns supply food, and Ravenscar village hall is available for large parties (contact Mrs. Russell 01723 870801). Details of the numerous B&B accommodation and campsites are available from the local authority tourist offices :- Rydale District Council 01653- 600666, Hambleton District Council 01609-779977, Scarborough District Council 01723-373333, or from the North Yorkshire Moors National Park Information Service 01439-770657.
