The Lyke Wake Race

Although the Lyke Wake Club is opposed to making the Lyke Wake Walk into a race in general, they have for the past 36 years held an annual race over the route; this is the only day of the year when the club is willing to accept record breaking attempts.

The annual Lyke Wake Race, open to runners and walkers alike, is run on a handicap basis and starts from the Sheepwash car park (just north of the village of Osmotherley) from about 0330hrs until about 1030hrs. The presentation of the trophies taking place at the Raven Hall Hotel, Ravenscar at about 1700hrs. Although the normal Lyke Wake Walk rule applies regarding the maximum the maximum of twenty-four hours for the 42 mile crossing it is assumed that no racers will take over twelve hours and as such the handicap marshall can only allow a maximum of twelve hours.

Apart from the start and finish there are a further seven checkpoints along the route. All these except the start supply drinks to competitors, and one checkpoint at approximately half way also supplies food.

Transport is available to take competitors bags, clothes etc. from the start to the finish and also to transport any retired competitors to the finish.

Each entrant who completes the race within twelve hours will receive a special completion certificate. Several perpetual trophies are awarded, but recipients do also receive a trophy to keep. The perpetual trophies are as follows :-

Lyke Wake Shield to the fastest overall time

M & E Toyne Memorial Cup to the fastest overall time of the opposite sex

Masterman Rosebowl to the to the winner on handicap

George Ward Rosebowl to the opposite sex handicap winner

Bill Hardcastle Memorial Cup to the winning team (teams to consist of 6 members at least one of which must be of the opposite sex. The time for each team is calculated on the fastest four members, of which at least one must be of the opposite sex.

Ben Hingston Plate to the veteran winner (55+ years of age)


Brief rules as follows (a) Once accepted there is no cancellation - i.e. we keep your entry fee. (b) Competitors must adhere to time and instructions given on their start sheets. This will be sent to them at least one full week before the race day. No confirmation of acceptance will be sent prior to this. (c) Full rules will be given on the start sheet.

The entry fee is £8.00 of which 50p is donated to Ravenscar village hall funds. Please make cheques payable to ‘Lyke Wake Race Committee' and also send two large s.a.e. with your application form which must reach the Race Director at the above address before 21st June 2003.
