What Is A Bear?

What Is A Bear?

If you are a boy who has completed the second grade or you are 9 years old, you can be a Bear Cub Scout. The Bear program is designed for third grade boys. As a Bear, you are a member of a Den. There are other boys who are also Bear Cub Scouts in your den and there is a Den Leader. Your whole den, plus some other dens containing Tigers, Wolves, and Webelos Scouts, make up the Pack. Your pack is led by a Cubmaster and a committee of other adults that keep the pack going. Together with a lot of other packs, you are a member of the Boy Scouts of America.

When you start out in the Bear program, you are not a Bear yet, but you will begin working to earn your Bear badge. You are already well prepared...you have a Wolf Badge to wear proudly from last year. (If this is your first year in Cub Scouts, you will earn your Bobcat Badge as the first step to becoming a Bear.)

The Big Bear Trail is made up of 115 requirements grouped into 24 achievements. You must complete 12 achievements to earn your Bear Badge. You can choose the ones you want to do from the 24 achievements. You'll have a lot of fun as you earn your achievements through your own hard work and with the help of your parents, your den leader, and other scouts. This will be a great adventure for you. When you finish all 12 achievements, you will be ready to wear your Bear Badge.

While you are heading along the Bear Trail, you can also search the Arrow Point Trail. The Arrow Point Trail is made up of 114 electives in 24 main areas. You will choose the activities that interest you from the Arrow Point Trail. When you complete the first 10 electives, you will earn a gold arrow point. For each additional set of 10 electives that you complete, you will earn a silver arrow point. You can also earn arrow points by completing additional Bear Achievements beyond the 12 you used to earn your Bear Badge.
