May 15, 1998 - Spring Camping Trip: The first hearty campers from Pack 606 left arrived at our campsite at Broad Creek Scout Reservation on Friday evening May 15, 1998. We set up camp at the Frontier cabin, a newly renovated structure with a wooded site. The theme of our trip was "Native American Folklore".
On Saturday morning, everyone got up early and went to visit the Indian Steps Museum. Located at 205 Indian Steps Road, Airville, PA, the museum gets its name from the "steps" carved in the rocks of the nearby Susquehanna River by local Indian fisherman, who used the footholds while fishing for shad. At the museum we saw a statue of a Native American Princess and we also saw some arrowheads, axes, and other Indian relics. After leaving the museum, we went on a hike down to a flowing river at the Otter Creek Campground. We made boats and floated them. But we had to put a string on the boats so that they didn't float too far away! We hiked back and we were all tired. We tried to make ice cream. The ice cream didn't really cooperate, but we had fun anyway and we got some ice cream in from the store. In the evening, we made a campfire and cooked our famous silver turtles. Then we sat around the campfire and told stories. When we finally went to our tents, it wasn't hard to fall asleep after such a busy day. We got up Sunday morning, ate cereal for breakfast, cleared out the campsite, and headed for home. All together, about 50 adventure-loving scouts, leaders, and parents enjoyed a glorious Spring weekend at Broad Creek.
Hats off to Ed Horvath for a job well done in his debut as Cubmaster and also to Cathy Atwell for doing the majority of the planning and shopping for this event.
