Den 1 Visits University of Maryland Police

UM SealUMPD Patch

On November 5, 1998, the Bears of Den 1 and their families visited the University of Maryland Police Department in College Park.

First, several of the officers talked to us about being a police officer and some of the tools of the job, like handcuffs.  We Learned About Police Tools
Getting Fingerprinted Was Messy Second, each scout was fingerprinted and we got to take the fingerprint cards home.  This was pretty messy.
Third, we got to sit on a police motorcycle with the lights flashing and an officer took a picture for us to keep.   Sitting on a Motorcycle Was Fun

Fourth, we pressed our hand on a white piece of paper.  You couldn't see it, but there was a hand print on there.  An officer put special black powder on there, and when she brushed it off you could see the print!  This is called a latent print and it can be used to identify a bad guy.

Next, we got to see the communications room where all the 911 calls are received and the police cars are dispatched.  We also got to see a holding cell where the police can keep a bad guy.

Finally, we got to see a police cruiser up close and when he got a call we got to watch him speed away with lights and siren blaring.

Thank you to the officers of the University of Maryland Police Department for their hospitality.
