What Is A Webelos Scout?

If you are a boy who has completed the third grade or you are 10/11 years old, you can be a Webelos Cub Scout. As a Webelos, you are a member of a Den. There are other boys who are also Webelos in your den and there is a Den Leader. Your whole den, plus some other dens containing Tigers, Wolves, and Bear Scouts, make up the Pack. Your pack is led by a Cubmaster and a committee of other adults that keep the pack going. Together with a lot of other packs, you are a member of the Boy Scouts of America.

When you start out in the Webelos program, you are not a Webelos yet, but you will begin working to earn your Webelos badge. You are already well prepared...you have a Bear Badge to wear proudly from last year. (If this is your first year in Cub Scouts, speak to your den leader about the first steps to becoming a Webelos.) The Webelos program is a two year program that provides you with the opportunity to earn 22 badges/activity pins and prepares you to become a Boy Scout.

"We'll Be Loyal Scouts"

The name Webelos (WeBeLoS) is the "code word" for this phrase. To earn the Webelos badge, you must do the following:

CS Have an adult family member read and sign the Parent Guide in your Webelos Handbook.
CS Be an active member of your Webelos Den for at least 3 months.
CS Know and explain the meaning of the Webelos badge.
CS Point out and explain the parts of the Webelos uniform. Tell when it is appropriate to wear your uniform and when not to.
CS Earn Fitness and two other activity badges from two different activity groupings.
CS Plan and lead a flag ceremony in your den.
CS Show that you understand the requirements to be a Boy Scout. Understand and practice these: Scout Oath or Promise, Scout Law, Scout Motto, Scout Slogan, Scout Salute, Scout Sign, Scout Handshake, Outdoor Code.
CS Earn the religious emblem of your faith or do two of alternate requirements found in the Webelos handbook.

When you have completed all of these requirements, you will earn your Webelos badge and you will also be very close to earning your Arrow of Light award.>

Arrow of Light Award

The Arrow of Light is the highest honor awarded to a Cub Scout. The Arrow of Light is the only symbol of Cub Scout rank that you wear on your Boy Scout uniform. When you earn the Arrow of Light, you have accomplished something great and you are on your way to Boy Scouts.

To earn the Arrow of Light, you must do the following:

CS Be active in your Webelos den for at least 6 months since completing 4th grade or becoming 10 years old. Earn the Webelos badge.
CS Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements for becoming a Boy Scout.
CS Earn 5 more activity badges. Combined with the badges you earned to earn the Webelos badge, you should now have 8 badges. Within these you must have Citizen, Readyman, and at least one each from the outdoor group, mental skills group, and technology group.
CS Visit at least one Boy Scout troop meeting and one Boy Scout outdoor activity with your den.
CS Participate in a Webelos overnight campout or day hike.
CS Talk with your Webelos leader. Visit a Boy Scout troop you'd like to join and talk to the Scoutmaster. Get an application to join, fill it out, have your parent sign it, and show it to your Webelos leader. Talk about your interest in becoming a Boy Scout.
