Mt. Elbert - 14,430 feet. Highest Mountain in Colorado ~ Leadville, Colorado

Here I am at the Mt. Elbert trailhead. We started our hike around 7am on a Saturday, and the parking lot was all ready full.

Nancy got a picture of me just before we climbed above treeline. The mountain you see behind me is Mt. Massive.

I got a picture of Nancy a few hundred feet above timberline. You see the top of the mountain behind her? I told myself, "there is the top, there is the top!" Surprise, it wasn't the top, but one of many I would climb before I actually did reach the summit. Though, I must have said "there's the top" at least 4 to 6 more times.

I am making this trek easier than it seemed. In reality, it is a really easy 14ner to climb, especially if you take the Mt. Elbert trail. Here we go, climbing to another "what-I-thought-was-the-top" crest of the climb.

When I finally did reach the closest level to the summit, I was very estatic. The energy I felt from the mountain was very moving and strong. The mountain called to me, "come look and see, take a peak at Colorado from the top of my Breast and never forget that mother nature loves you best!". When I climbed to the very top I was mortified to see all the people that I saw. I grew up in Colorado 4-wheeling and hiking, but this was my first 14ner, and excluding mountain biking, it had been over 20 years since I had done any serious hiking.

The weather was very beautiful and I could not leave. Nancy and I sat down to eat our lunch. I sure didn't want to leave, but Nancy reminded me that the storms come up really fast and we needed to head down. The next few pictures you see are phenominal sites looking down from the great Mt. Elbert. Sadly going back down, but remembering the love I felt from this mountain and never ever again do I take for granted this great planet we all share and live on.

You can't really tell to well, but in the picture below, Leadville is just to the upper left corner, and Turquoise Lake is just below and to the left.
