Y Mountain Trail
The Y Mountain Trail takes you to the block "Y" on the mountain. Besides being an easy hike, it's a great place to go and watch fireworks, or just enjoy the view.
To get to the Y Trailhead, turn east on 2230 N. from Universtiy Ave. Follow this past Canyon Road and around in front of the Provo Temple. It will turn south into 900 E. Follow this all the way down to 720 N. and make a left turn. You will go through a residential neighborhood, and then the road will turn left or north into Terrace something-or-other. Follow this up the hill, and turn east onto the first road you come to. This road will climb another hill and fork. Take the right fork to the top of the street where it T's and take a right. Follow this dirt road as far up as you can go and you will be at the Y Mountain Trailhead. It looks like this:
All you have to do now is follow the trail through the gates and up a few switchbacks, and you will be at the block Y. Of course, some of the more in-shape people like to park a little ways down from this parking lot and start out at the fence. There is a fence that goes straight up the mountain a ways that a lot of people like to hike along. It turns into sort of a footpath that makes its way straight up the mountain. We call this "hiking up the face." If you do this in the daytime in the sun, make sure you have plenty of water because it gets mighty hot hiking up something that steep in the sun. This trail is even steeper than the Jacobs Ladder route. The one good thing about hiking up the face is that it takes about half as long to get up as the maintained trail does.
