Shortly after I
first started climbing, the book Fifty Classic Climbs of North American
appeared in my local climbing store. It is not a stretch to state that this
book changed my life. It started a lifelong quest to travel and climb a great
variety of routes. At first I didn't have the skills to climb any of the routes
listed in this book, but it was my motivation to increase my skills. Many
nights were spent re-reading this book and planning adventures to come.
Now, almost
twenty years later, my passion hasn't diminished. I've done thirty of classic
routes now and I expect that I'll top out at forty. The last ten are either too
hard, too dangerous, too remote, too miserable, or maybe just too much. But I
have lots of climbing lists now and the lists grow far faster than I can check
off routes. No matter. It is the quest for adventure and travel and new
challenges that are important. But having that original Fifty Classic list and
re-reading it on winter evenings and dreaming about adventures to come still
remains one of my greatest pleasures. Heck, when I dream about adventures, I
dream the weather is always great and I'm always climbing strong.
Below is a table
