Jennie Guilbaud - 12/14/99 00:02:53 My Email:jennie.guilbaud@arch2.nara.gov What year(s) you attended: late 1980s to early 1990s. Bands you saw: Young Caucasians, Scruffy the Cat, Robyn Hitchcock, Suzanne Vega (she wasn't playing, but came to see Robyn), what's his name Sexton, The Zydeco dude, and the guys who sang "Cult of Personality." The grey matter just doesn't work as good as it used, too. People you met: Mark Hall and Ted the bar tenders. I think it was Sharon--the blonde with all the body piercing who tended the bar. Guy Waynes--the art guy, Ollie Cuttshaw, Mary Edsall, Marc Wolfe, Jim & Karen Cassedy, Sue Gindlin & Dan Weidman, an Maguire (wasn't a regular, tho), Jason--who did the lights for the shows, Scottie--who took us to the Chesapeake Club, and so many more. Videos you remember: The Cure, Dead Milkmen, Voltaire, They Might Be Giants, Fish Heads (usually played on Dr. Demento), Peter Gabriel, Chemical Lab (I think that was Jason's band), Siouxsie and the Banshees, PIL, Urgh (Music Documentary), the Movi --Pet Cemetery. Where are you now?: Still in the DC area. What do you do?: Still working at the National Archives. | Comments: I do recall having some good times with Ms. Camille at the 9:30 Club and I was so pleased to see your website. Jim passed it on to me. I still have my 10th anniversary T-Shirt from the place. The 9:30 Club was part of my Friday evening ritual. I'd dr ve in from Suitland on Fridays to meet my buds for a few beers. Boy, could we ever put them away in those days! It would be great to walk in and before I reached the bar, Ted would have my beer waiting for me. I usually sat on the barstool at the end o the bar, and, if someone was in it (who wasn't part of the group), Ted would tell them to get off cuz it was my seat. It was a time when you could feel like you were still a little bit wild before you became a "suit." Even now, If you were a 9:30 Club egular, you could never completely become a "Suit." The place marks you for life! Wonderfully so. Camille, thanky you for putting up such a great website. Ciao. |

I wound up with a free pass to all shows around 1990, so forgive me if I can't recall 'em all. People you met: You, briefly (I think) - Jim Cassedy, Sharon the bartendress, Mark Hall, a whole bunch of his wife's friends (who wound up really hating me . . ) Videos you remember: Laibach, Iggy, Bryan Ferry, Peter Gabriel, uh, I forget. Where are you now?: At work What do you do?: As little as possible, frankly | Comments: Cool site. Thanks for the memories. Brings me back to a time when life was an adventure. |
George R. Shaner - 11/22/99 16:44:12 My Email:George_Shaner@Yahoo.com What year(s) you attended: 1983 'til the end. Bands you saw: Twenty a year. People you met: Numberous folks at happy hour. Videos you remember: They don't make 'em like they used to. Where are you now?: Still in DC. What do you do?: Work for the National Archives | Comments: At one point I was practically living in the club, as I would often be there for happy hour Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, before it just went to Friday, then to none. I just went to so many shows it's hard to know where to start. One amusing comment I remember seeing in the British music magazine "Q" made mention of the club in the context of British bands that were big overseas but not here, this is just before the old place shut down. Well, the comment was that it was unattract ve to go from playing to 20,000 people then go to playing the notorious club in DC that was famous for the size of the rats in the dressing room. In fact, the last week the club was open, Alice Despard (who has played in a number of local bands over the years) was opening for Robin Hitchcock, and a rat did run through the dressing room. This weirded out Robin and lead Alice to comment that the rat was just as scared of them. Alice didn't comment as to whether Robin was greatly relieved by this. |

But married. With a five year olde. What do you do?: Still an Archivist | Comments: What an outstandingly fine site you have. I was out surfing for a band from my youth - Tiny Desk Unit, that a friend reminded me of. Hence I land on your site. I still work for the Archives, and I do confess I ended up at 9:30 way too often - Wed. Thur . and Friday on occasion. Mark Hall was a rather outstanding bartender, wouldn't you agree? Much good music was played, many outstanding characters, super place to hide out from the Reagan/Bush 80's. I was a quiet sort, so probably not remembered by ma y. I intend to share your site w/some friends of mine - your picture is on-line, I hope they recognize you and jog my poor befogged 40 something mind. Thanks for putting the old 9:30 on-line - it was an extremely cool place, gosh I miss it sometimes. |

Natalie McDonald - 11/02/98 03:04:51 My URL:http://www1.shore.net/~natalie/ My Email:natalie@shore.net What year(s) you attended: mid-80s Bands you saw: The Bongos People you met: Richard Barone Videos you remember: None, I was in the dressing room! Where are you now?: Gloucester, MA What do you do?: "Depth Charge!" | Comments: I used to visit the 9:30 Club during what we called "DC Rampages." When we knew that The Bongos were playing DC, a group of us would leave Hackensack, New Jersey and *most* would stay at a townhouse owned by a group called Contraband which had a recordin studio in the basement and a boa constrictor in the bedroom. I couldn't handle sleeping there, though, so I'd go stay at the same hotel as The Bongos, the Ramada Inn (yeah, the one where Marion Barry got busted for coke). Richard Barone and I wrote son s together there which were later recorded and released in the UK. Our first collaboration was called "Scream of Consciousness." There was a group of fans who followed The Bongos around the country called the "DC Cabs," and when we would come to town, t ey would take us to the Adams Morgan district to a restaurant that I think was called The Red Sea where we'd eat with our hands and get gloriously drunk on Ethiopian honey wine before the radio interviews. Those were the days!!!! |

Hmmm, what to say. That club was the first place that I can say that I truly experieced what it was like to see live music. I'm a little young (merely 23) but I spent as much time as humanly possible while in high school t ying to find a ride downtown without missing curfew and having my parents find out. I remember during my Junior year going to see the Dead Milkmen and having some homeless man give me a cellophane full of mulch telling me it was weed. What a place. I emember that I could never get away with going there without permission because that damn smell would linger in your hair and clothes for god knows how long. Not to mention those obnoxiously huge stamps they made you wear if you were underage. Well, I h ve to say that I miss the old place, the new one just isn't as cool. Great bands still go there but it's just not nearly as fun anymore. Its just all too clean. Sigh... |

I practically lived at the 930 club! I mostly supported local bands, but was there for big names too. I miss the stench too. I still have my old leather and guess what? Yup, it's STIL THERE!! Did you know Fred Smith from Beefeater & Strange Boutique? He worked there too I think. He lives in LA now too. Another bartender, Kristin is out there - she worked at Poseurs too. THis is funny to me: my brother is an Archaeologist too, my fa her worked at the National Archives for 35 years, I used to go to the Depot, AND, i'm going back to Ireland soon to visit friends. Weird, small world, eh? see ya! -T. |
