Big Game Hunting Locations in Colorado

Flat Tops Wilderness

SPOT 14: Stillwater Valley

This spot is located just southeast of Buford. As you drive up the Stillwater Valley most of the land along the bottom is private. However, at the end of the valley you will see a sign for Hill Creek Trail. Follow that trail up the side of the flat top. This is extremely rough country due to the steepness and the amount of downed timber. You are going to have to do some climbing to get up above the thick stuff and into the open meadows above.

The trick to hunting this spot is to get up high very early and let other hunters push the game to you. Come daylight all the other hunters are going to park along the bottom of the South Fork of the White River and hunt up toward the rim. This will drive the game to you.

SPOT 15: Fowler Creek

This spot is located at the headwaters of Fowler Creek. Take Trail 2256 up. The trail breaks off of Trail 2255 or Trail1826. It will take you past spot 14. Up toward the headwaters of Fowler Creek the hills are completely timbered and you will be at about 10,500 to 11,000 feet in elevation. There are a few open meadows up there, but the area you want to concentrate on is along the creek bed. Look for tracks and frequently used wallows.

SPOT 16: Upper Stillwater Valley

This spot is located at the top of Stillwater Valley at the beginning of Trail 1827/Lost Solar Creek Trail. At the top of the valley there is a big open meadow with a finger of woods sticking out into the middle where an elk herd resides. This is one place you won't have to go very far to get a crack at a bull. Farther up, the South Fork of the White River flows through a steep canyon. On the north side of the canyon is a big meadow, while the south side is heavily timbered.

SPOT 17: Far Up Stillwater Valley

You get to this spot by walking farther up Trail 1828 from spot 16. You will cross about four different drainages on your left, then come to a high spot that overlooks a decent sized meadow just to the north. You will be at about 10,000 feet. It's a good place to sit and watch the edge of the timber for big animals moving around early in the morning and late in the evening.
