Big Game Hunting Locations in Colorado

Flat Tops Wilderness

SPOT 18: Mid Solar Creek

As you continue farther up Solar Creek you will cut across another two drainages into some open parks. Right there a forest bottleneck crosses the trail from the north to the south. In addition, the bottleneck is located in a saddle which gets an inordinate amount of game activity.

SPOT 19: Lost Solar Park

This spot is located a half mile past the last one on the far side of Horseshoe Lake. You'll be hunting the fringe of a huge meadow that elk frequent.

SPOT 20: Upper Doe Creek

This spot is located where the flat tops really start opening up. The terrain gets very flat and you will be able to look over a huge expanse of grass meadows. Those meadows support Colorado's largest elk herd.

SPOT 21: Buck Creek

Drive Road 600 north until you cannot drive any further, being careful that you don't go to the Wagon Wheel Creek area. Then take Trail 1827 up along Meadows Creek. On your right will be Elk Knob just off of Trail 1838. All around Elk Knob you can see many elk. Especially on the east side where there are a lot of beaver ponds and a creek drainage. The creek bottom is a great place to look for fresh tracks and gauge recent elk activity in the area.

SPOT 22: Southwest of Trappers Peak

Four miles above the meadows you'll find a lot more water as the area becomes flatter. All around the water you are going to see and incredible amount of elk sign. You should plan to spend the entire day hunting up there. You can get your bearings from Trappers Peak so you'll always know about where you are.

SPOT 23: Upper South Fork of the White River

This spot is located farther up White River. You will notice that all the north facing slopes of the drainage are heavily timbered with spruce. The elk will be in the spruce during the day, and in the bottoms and fields in the mornings and the evenings.

SPOT 24: Saddle of the 1830 Trail

This spot is situated in the area just to the west of the south fork of the White River. You get there by walking up Trail 1830. You can hunt a saddle that goes from the Park Creek side to the White River side. This is the best place to sit and catch the local herd moving from one side of the drainage to the other. You will be positioned between two knolls on which are several watering ponds that attract game.
