Bike/Camping on the C&O
Canal Towpath
The
following is an account of a bike/camping trip on the C&O canal towpath
from June 28th, to July 3rd., 1997. We traveled from the start in
Cumberland Md. (mile marker 184) to the finish in Georgetown Washington
D.C. (mile marker 0). There were 5 of us on the trip; myself, my
two brothers (Ed and Paul) and a friend of ours and his wife( Sam and Amy).
All are retired and had gone on several day rides together in preparation
for this trip. My brother Ed and I had completed the trip 10 years
earlier going in the opposite direction from D.C. to Cumberland.
We found it in better condition now than it was then. The National
Park Service did a remarkable job in
restoration of the Canal and Towpath Following the floods of 1996.
The entire Towpath was open and passable except for the usual detour, and
that will be described in detail during this account. It is my hope to
provide you with some helpful information should you decide to ride any
part of the canal towpath.
