The fun begins as the Centennial Scout Jamboree, the biggest and most awaited Scouting event of the century, reels off today in Clark Field's Special Economic Zone with President and Chief Scout Fidel V. Ramos as guest of honor and speaker.
  More than 31,000 Scouts and Scouters from the Philippines and other membercountries of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, most of which have historical links to the Philippines have registered. The Girl Scouts of the Philippines has sent 1,000 delegates.
  With the theme ·' Scouts: Mga Bayani sa Kinabukasan," the historic Jamboree is a bolster world attention and bring the Filipino youth closer to the Centennial celebration. The President, a staunch advocate of Scouting, has envisioned this Jamboree to usher in the nationwide celebration of the 100th year of Philippine independence.

  During the launching of the Jamboree in Malacaņang, the President said: "It is fitting that we have chosen to inaugurate our first 100 years of indepedence as Asia's first Republic with a Centennial Scout Jamboree. As the youth led in the past, so will they again in the future. The site of theJamboree overlooks "Expo Pilipino," the flagship project of the Centennial celebration that is now undergoing massive construction for its grand opening in March. A committee headed by Brig. Gen. Angelino Medina, vice president of Clark Development Corporation, has cleared some 64 hectares of  land covered by lahar and planted with cogon grass in the vicinity of what used to be the calvalry unit of US Air Force and the picnic grove of Clark and transformed it into a community of colorful tents that shall be home of the boys for the next seven days of fun and brotherhood. At least 400 Scouts from Pampanga conducted a dryrun last month to test the facilities of what has been dubbed as the "biggest Scouting event in the annuals of Philippiens Scouting."

    Also designated as the 11th BSP National Jamboree, highlights of the affair are Philippine Centennial night, pageant of heroes, cultural show, grand campfire, drum and bugle corps. Competition, announcement of the winners of the search of the Outstanding Boy Scouts and youth forum.
    There will also be the centennial trail, emergency preparedness, global development village, Jamboree clean and green, challenge valley arts and crafts, orienteering and bike riding. Resource persons have been invited to conduct special activities such as kite flying, archery, various scoutcrafts, basic computer, ham radio, artificial rock climbing, rapelling, silk screen printing, chess, darts and martial arts.

    Words of welcome will be delivered by Education Secretary and Jamboree Organizing Committee Chairman Ricardo T. Gloria, Pampanga Governor Lito Lapid and Clark Development  Corporation President Romeo S. David. World Scout Committee Chairman Francisco Roman, will deliver an inspirational message while BSP National President Roberto Pagdanganan will introduce the guest of honor.
