This camp is run for one week a year at the beginning of August by the Jacksonville Recreation and Parks Department, and is located at the Mitchell 4H camp in Swansboro. The reigning Queen of the camp is Jane Champney, she is a senior recreation supervisor at the recreation department and the brains and muscle behind this camp. Jane is one of the best people I have ever worked for, she runs her camp with the minimum of interference in the programs of her instructors, this is not to say that she just sits in the office and lets us get on with it, she takes great interest in the day to day running of the camp but does it from a discrete distance so as not to be a disturbance to the class in progress.
To an outsider it may look as if Jane has no operating system in place, in fact the opposite is true but because things at this camp run so smoothly this system is invisible to somebody looking at it from outside. Those of us working within it know it is there and that is all that matters.
Jane hand picks her staff for their skills and commitment to camp. We all respect her and Shay [the program director] and do everything we can to make the camp a success. Yes we try to push the bounds of what she will allow us to do but we never take [to much] advantage of her good nature ; ). Jane can always be counted on to be one of the biggest campers at camp, then again I think that all the counselors I have ever worked with are the biggest campers at camp.
On the whole my time at all my camps, with a few exceptions, have been the best in my life. Working for Jane ranks right up there with the best of my experiences.
