Glacier National ParkPlease be patient and let the pictures load, it will be worth the wait. Glacier National Park - Avalanche Lake Throughout the years I have been to many of our National Parks but after my recent visit to Glacier National Park, I must say that I think it is the prettiest one by far. It is simply a spectacular place. The drive up Going to the Sun road is the most awesome drive I have been on. I've have driven through Yellowstone, Rocky Mtn, Acadia, Smoky Mtn, and Shenandoah National Parks and there is no drive that is any more spectacular or as beautiful as Going to the Sun Road. I must say that I think I was there at the perfect time of year, the end of June. The road was not open over the pass until the 1st week of June so you have to wait until after that. The weather was perfect and there was still plenty of snow up on the mountain peaks so there were waterfalls pouring off the mountains everywhere. We hiked to several waterfalls and lakes. Avalanche Lake, shown above was very pretty as were the waterfalls above it pouring off of the mountains. Avalanche creek below the lake goes through a very narrow gorge that makes for some really pretty waterfalls and whitewater. We also hiked to McDonald Falls, Running Eagle Falls, Apikuni Falls, and Red Rock Lake and Falls. We saw a bunch of wildlife too. About the only thing we didn't see that I've never seen before was a Moose. We saw black bears, a brown bear, a grizzly with two cubs, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, tons of deer, weasels, a thing they called a Hoary Marmot, eagles, and of course a lot of ground squirrels and chipmunks. There are also three different lodges and old hotels that you should check out. Lake McDonald Lodge, Many Glacier Hotel, and the lodge at East Glacier are all very beautiful rustic log structures. The Lake McDonald Lodge has the biggest fireplace I have ever seen and all kinds stuffed wildlife on display. Well I am sure you are saying "enough already, show me the pictures". So here are pictures from my trip. I hope you enjoy them and if you get a chance go to Glacier National Park and experience it firsthand. |
