Subject: | Roosevelt Lake Rainbow Trout |
Jim P and I fished Lake Roosevelt above Spring Canyon Campground
(Electric City, Washington) Friday and half day Saturday. Fishing was good but
the wind howled all of Friday and most of Saturday. Wave conditions on Friday
reminded me of the ocean. Did I say the fishing was good. All told we caught 11 Rainbows ranging from 15 to 21 inches, 6 kokanee ranging from 14 to 21 inches, and 1 21 inch walleye. We lost countless others especially kokanee. Both the rainbows and the kokanee are the scrappiest fish that one can imagine; the entertainment comes in watching the fish strum the pole back and forth on the take and watching them dance on the water. The kokanee fight so hard that they seem a little kamikaze by ripping the hooks out of their mouths. In a couple of cases, Jim P using 6 # test line let the fish have his rapala. 6 # test was deemed to be too light for these fish. The walleye came in like a stick but was very welcome for table fare. All of the fish were caught trolling in 5 to 20 feet of water near the sandy shores. The fish were mostly caught on 3" fire tiger rapalas long lined behind the boat; however, I managed to catch one rainbow on a orange k-fly on a silver blade, red beaded Mark's Lure.
