Hmm, less than 1 month after the beginning of the trip. Got the pictures up quickly this year! Lots of great pictures, some with more detail than scanning allowed. In order to reduce download time for viewing, some of these had to be scanned in and shrunk at lower levels. Disappointing, but they're still good pictures. The waterfall shots came out very well. We had a hard time selecting from them. As always, this site best viewed with 800x600 pixels.
This was of the small falls on the 60 rod portage along the Little Indian Sioux. The portage was "shored up" to remain passable. If you were careful, you could get right down off the falls for some great pictures.
From above the falls was a different picture. Notice the small "shelf". The wash below is also interesting in this shot.
This was our base-camp this year. Three tents are visible, the fourth was back in the trees, well sheltered. We discovered the wind could get very strong out on this southern point.
The shadows of this actual photo were terrific. If you look closely, you can see some of the detail around the canoes...
Loved the potential of this picture, and it came out! Note the rocks in the water up front. This was looking back into Shell Lake from the 60 rod portage into Heritage. We walked up this creek one afternoon, not realizing there was a portage there. The beavers constructed a pretty solid dam here, a good 3-4 feet of water was held back.
Devil's Cascade...a good day-trip. Portage is straight up, then straight down. There's a point you could go out on and look down over treetops.
One other picture of Devil's Cascade. There was a better picture, but it simply couldn't be scanned in and shrunk to fit the webpage without losing all detail.
We got within 80 yards of this eagle in the canoe. Unfortunately, it was tough to stay steady. Had him taking off, but we moved...this one was a second too slow as his wings are down rather than up.
These purple flowers were gorgeous, blooming right where a patch of sunlight seeped through the trees above. The photo lost some after being scanned in. There are two "rows" of flowers, one clear and the other (behind it) blurred. It was exactly the shot desired.
This is not a doctored picture. One of the last mornings (when we managed to get up early enough to see the fog!) this picture "developed" on it's own.
If you look closely, you can see the fog to the right and the sunrise to the left. There's even a close-up of the sunrise, where it looks like fire and smoke. It was beautiful to see.
Every year we get a picture like this. This one was glorious to sit and watch!
One of the best ever sunsets. The color is close to the actual photo, but the detail is missing. The only way to get it is to scan in and run about 650kb in size compared to 15-20kb. What a beautiful sight though!
One morning, this web (about 20' up the tree) was just glistening with dew. Too bad it wasn't a little closer to earth! It was also ironic that it was in a tree by the privie, not the most scenic atmosphere for a great shot! |
'00 had it's ups and downs. We didn't see any moose. Still, there were some great shots, probably the best, most consistent photo's we've taken so far in the BWCAW. It was very hard to select 2 or 3 of the best from certain groups of photos. The moon shots were not as successful as we had hoped, but there's always next year. Check out the photos by Lee H. in the Gallery as well. A fellow CanoeCountry Listserv member, he accompanied us this year and sent some photos to us.
