Here it is...our Longest trip ever!!! Unfortunately, it takes two maps and a LOT of space. This was the maiden voyage in the BWCA for my father and I. We did 85 water miles and 5 portage miles (x3=15 total miles) all in 8 days on the water. This trip was part of a "class" offered by my university. The instructor claimed that in the 8 or 9 years he'd done this, the weather was always great.
We entered the BWCA shortly after the ice broke. The water was crystal clear and cold. It rained for about half the trip. The final morning out, we actually canoed through snow squalls. Dad's most memorable moment is the constant reminder that in all he's done, he's never felt as cold and miserable as he did that last night (camp 8). We had to drag the canoes in thigh to waist deep water due to the wind/waves. Then we went to bed wet...everything was wet.
Overall, it was a learning experience. Thanks to that trip, we designed our own trip, one much more "user friendly." If you ever get to Cache Bay, beware the high waves...but do go see the pictographs and Silver Falls. Both are well worth the trip!
Thanks once again to Superior National Forest (UMN) for their map server. As always, visit them via my links page, link below.
