This was our first year to take our own group up. We chose what we thought was a pretty easy route, forgetting how the wind can rip through long, large lakes like this! Overall, it wasn't bad.
The portage from Newton to Basswood was where the pictures of rapids were taken if I remember correctly. We camped on the point marked on the map. KEEP IN MIND: we generally canoe in and set up a base camp. This is where we set up and stay up! Across the little bay to the east, there was a nice sandy beach that went out a good 20 yards into the lake. It made a great place to swim, bathe, whatever you chose. Luckily, the campsite there was empty. One of the campsite views shows the beach across the way.
We went around the north point one day, to the group of small islands. That is where the pictures on the hill were taken. On our way back, we discovered the wind REALLY whips around the corner from the west. It took everything we had to make it back to camp that afternoon. That's something you want to consider if you ever get into this neck of the woods.
The way out was pretty easy. We got lucky and the wind never really got going. This was definitely a learning experience for us.
