This year's trip was the last full week of August ending Labor Day weekend. We put in at the "Chainsaw Sisters." The lake/river was low and we had to hike to the entry point, then at one point pull the canoes thru the shallow water. Once we got into Fourtown, we headed to the small chain of lakes between Fourtown and Horse. We had two campsites this year due to the number of people in our group. The two campsites (one of which is marked on the map) were fantastic. We had Vultures, Hawks, and Eagles flying over us. Two of our group hiked 1/2 way around the small lake and found wolf tracks on the way back that weren't there the first time by. Thus we got to see tracks less than 1 hour old. We had gorgeous weather, almost no bugs, and (unfortunately) little luck fishing. The latter we are getting used to after 4 trips up in August.
We spent a day going through Horse into the river. Our goal was Basswood Falls. However, we didn't make it that far. Horse Lake had aggressive winds moving North to South and the river had 2-3 times the number of shown portages, with lots of low water situations. It was still a wonderful trip.
On our way up, we again stopped in Duluth. The city has such a wonderful view, it's well worth the trip.
