Welcome to tahoe's BWCAW '98 Route.
1998 August Trip
This year's trip was the first full week of August, 1st-9th. We put in at the end of the Gunflint Trail. Plans changed and we did not stay at the Way of the Wilderness outfitters bunkhouse on either the first or last nights. Our route is marked in red on the map. The first campsite was for one night only, as we put in at 8:30 pm. We stayed at the second site for 3 days and the third site for 2 days. We canoed out on Friday and drove to Brainerd, MN, spending that night in a hotel and getting home Saturday. There were only 7 in our group this year as 5 or 6 had to cancel. Seems like this is the most we've ever had drop since we started requiring a deposit.
On our way up, we stopped in Duluth, as well as Grand Marais. Duluth I know has such a wonderful view, it's well worth the trip, but this was my first time in GM. We also stopped at Gander Mountain in Duluth on the way home. Regretfully, we did not find the east side as appealing as the west. I guess we just like the "hometown" feel of Ely. At least now we know. We will continue to go through Duluth however!
