This year's trip was August 21-28. Put in at Farm Lake, traveled up the N. Kawishiwi, around the "loop" to S. Kawishiwi, into Clear Lake, back out through Farm Lake.
Well, we went straight to Ely on the way up. We caught Duluth on the return leg. Weather was fantastic. Most small portages were easy to run if you were going downstream. The 210 rod on the N. Kawishiwi was one of the worst I've been on, ranks right up there with the Little Isabella to Bald Eagle portage and the Silver Falls portage. Mosquitoes were terrible, up and down terrain, it took a lot out of you. The 70 and 160 rod portages on Clear Lake were wonderfully easy. Mosquitoes on the N. Kawishiwi were bad at ALL times. They were only bad around sunrise/sunset on Clear Lake. Fishing was same as usual, but I'm not a fisherman either. The second campsite from the 160 r. portage on Clear Lake was an outstanding campsite. Two eagles appeared to make their home in the bay on the north side. We saw LOTS of eagles, loons, and beavers (and two woodpeckers)...but really nothing else. The river system was quite high and mosquitoes were the worst I've seen in general. Talked to others passing through and they agreed.
