It all started during spring quarter break, 1977.
The first oil embargo was just getting started. Unleaded gas was running an attrocious 79 cents a gallon. If you came across a station advertising it any cheeper, you stopped regardless just to top off.
We were poor college students living in our first apartment.
We were faced with a big dilemma:
A full week off from school and a mounting desire to vacation, how were we going to arrange a ski trip with less than pocket change available?Margaret came up with the answer: If we rent just one room for all of us then we can split the costs 4 ways!. We can bring sleeping bags, and cook in the room using the electric skillet. We can sneek the ice chest in with our luggage.
Margaret produced a brouchure: SKI FAMOUS IDAHO SNOW.
RELAX IN THE COUNTRY CHARM OF THE BUCKINEER LODGE AFTER A FUN FILLED DAY ON BOGUS BASIN MOUNTAIN.What? 69 dollars for 3 nights and 3 lift tickets of ski in ski out??? 69 smack-a-roos? A mere quarters' of college fees for 3 days and 3 nights at the Buckineer Lodge??JUST 20 MINUTES FROM DOWNTOWN BOISE, YOUR MOUNTAIN TOP ROOM PROVIDES EASY ON, EASY OFF, SKI IN AND SKI OUT.
3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS 69.00 QUAD.
So we packed the sleeping bags, the ice chest, the electric skillet, the popcorn popper, skis, boots, poles into not one but 2 cars and the 4 of us drove 18 straight hours (with a brief intermission in Reno so Beth could loose some of her money) to beautiful Bogus Basin Idaho.
But wait it get better, really.
So on the first morning, we boiled water in the skillet balanced over the bathroom skin for hot chocolate. Then bacon was fried, followed by scrambled eggs. There was no toast. Dishes were done in the bath tub - later.
Putting on my barrowed ski gear (poor college student, now) I discovered that Judy's boots are just a little big. A second pair of socks didn't help much. Wadding up a third sock in the toe of each boot was an improvement. But finally, with the forth sock folded under my heal, I was confident I wouldn't have any trouble. I was excited about trying out my older brothers Kneisel 175s. Finally I was ready to address the mountain.
K Mart jacket, knit hat and gloves (they were a set I received for christmas about 3 years prior and was glad to finally be able to use them) Kevins skis, Judys boots, Levis jeans. Obviously there'll be no trouble here!
Have you ever attempted to turn a pair of skis on spring snow with FOUR pairs of socks stuffed in, on, around, and under your feet?
Three days were servived, 3 nights endoured, 3 meals out of the skillet ingeniously prepared for 69 bucks plus gas and food.
And who says skiing is expensive?
I'd do it again.
