Bob Holding Snapper Weight
11.1 kg
or 24.5 lb |
Nicknames: snapper,bream and tamure.
Identification: Only member of sea bream family in NZ waters.
Golden-red in color with blue green spots.
Small fish have the standard bream shape. Larger fish can have different shapes,
long and skinny with sloping foreheads, short and fat with huge jaws,
Size: The average snapper weighs only one or two kilo's,
Trophy snapper's weigh over nine kilo's.
Habitat: Saltwater in the northern half of NZ and some of the
warm parts of the South Island. Snapper numbers correlate directly with the suitability of the water as nursery
grounds. Best fishing is always connected with large harbor systems or big bays with some sheltered water.
River and Harbor mouths with sandy channels and discolored water may also be good places to find snapper. Farther
out to sea they may be found over rocky reefs down to two hundred meter's
Feeding: Snapper will feed over both soft and hard bottoms,
but are most often found along reefs and rocky shore lines. Fish caught over soft bottoms usually are near shell
beds or some other food source.
How to catch: Most fishing techniques will take snapper. Cut bait works very well and is used by many. In
shallow water lightly weighted pilchard baits work well. In deeper water standard ledger (dropper) rigs are mostly used.
Jig's and slow trolled bib lures work if fished deep and slow. As with most fish the larger the bait the larger the fish as you
eliminate the smaller fish. Rubber tailed lures worked slowly down a burley trail on rocks can be effective also.
