"Striped Bass"
Morone saxatilis by scientific name is a rapid growing fish that has been transplanted across the country. Valued for its fighting spirit, it also makes excellent table fare. A migrator at times Striped Bass have been found to move 24 miles in a day.
The key to catching striped bass is having the right bait. Gathering the bait with a cast net is one method we use in the tail waters of dams here in western Kentucky. Gizzard Shad, Threadfin Shad, and Skipjack Herring are the primary baits used here. Locating and catching the bait that the stripers are feeding on is the most important aspect in becoming a successful striper fisherman. Striped Bass although often a voracious eater is sometimes very picky about the size, type, and freshness of the bait they will take . Keeping the bait fresh is just as important as catching it. My Dad started me fishing and we still catch em together today. Dad taught me to catch bluegill which was great as a child and still is today. I taught Dad how to catch striped bass, sometimes paybacks are great.
My Father-in-law pictured to the left is also a great fishing companion. Just do not hand him your fishing rod even for a second or he will catch the largest fish of any type you have ever seen.
