March 30- Sunny, warm, almost hot, light breeze to mostly calm. Linda and I went to Lost Creek Cove and spent most of our time there. We didn't get to fish some of the best little coves in there due to the fact that some guys were walking down the shoreline right next to the water. The one cove we did get to fish, Linda caught a nice bass in, on a floating rapala. I tried plastic worm, but no hits. We both caught trout, but Linda caught a real nice one, about 2 lbs. Beautiful day, wonderful to be out.
March 31- Sunny, warm, breezy from the NW. Went by myself and fished the Pioneer Cabin end of the lake. Saw a big bass on the rocks at the island, but didn't get any bites there. Fished all the coves along Long Point and did see a bass in close in a shadow area. When I got into some rocky areas I anchored out and dragged a black power worm, (unweighted), through the rocks. I caught some big bass doing that. The first one was 2 lbs. 15 oz. (picture) I hooked another in the same area that was 4 lbs. even. (picture) Went and tried another rock pile, and had similar luck... caught one 3 lbs. 11 oz. (picture) In the rocks that were in shady areas seemed to be the place. After that I tried a few coves on the way back to the boat ramp and got 3 more, one about 2 lbs., on floating rapala. Total of 6 bass, and one trout caught in close to shore on a rapala.
April 3- Sunny, warm, mostly light breeze from the west. Pete Villa and I went to Lost Creek Cove first. We fished the whole thing, not catching any, but we did see some nice ones in close to shore. We went over to the South side next and I hooked a nice bass in a shady spot, but it came off. Hooked a trout right after in the same spot. I got a surface hit from under a weed mat on a plastic worm, but he missed it. I also got a good hit on a plastic worm on a tree in the water, but didn't hook him either. Finally got a nice bass (2 lb. 1 oz.) on a rapala in the back of a small cove. Picture I ended up catching 2 more bass in close to shore on Rapala, and we saw some other nice ones, but they weren't biting. I ended up with 6 fish total, 3 trout and 3 bass, and Pete got 2 trout.
April 22- Sunny, warm, a little windy from the west or south west. Linda and I went to the N. side of Long Point and fished back toward the Pioneer cabin. There were a few people already fishing along shore, and the wind blowing so hard made us cross over before getting too far. We ended up pulling up on shore and enjoying the sun. We did see a couple of nice fish, and I moved one with my rapala, but no fish caught. Even though we didn't catch anything, it was still a pretty nice day.
April 23- Sunny, warm enough, light breeze most of the day, increasing from the north in the evening. Went by myself and fished the north side of Long Point. Caught a couple on rapala, but the plastic worm got the best results. Got one pretty nice smallmouth (about a pound) on the rapala too. I got the worm fish mostly on deeper rocks, but got some bites on trees too. Didn't see any fish in the coves, and didn't catch many in those areas either. My first good fish weighed 2lbs, 6oz. (picture) I caught another right after that one that weighed 4lbs, 11oz. (picture) Both took a black plastic worm. Better fishing today than yesterday, total- 8.
April 24- Sunny, but a little high clouds early in the day. Variable breeze most of the day, turning more steady out of the north in the evening. Went by myself and went toward Lost Creek Cove. Stopped to fish a favorite rock pile on the way, and got a bite on a plastic worm there, and caught a nice bass on a white spinnerbait. Threw that spinnerbait alot more throughout the day, and never got any more hits on it. Worked my way slowly into Lost Creek Cove, most of my fish today were under something. I caught all the rest of my fish on plastic worm, throwing it either up on the mat and dragging it off, or landing it right next to the edge of the target I was aiming at. I weighed 4 fish.. they weighed 2lb 1oz, 2lb 14oz, 2lb 14oz, 3lb 3oz. Total caught today- 7.
April 25- Sunny in the morning, increasing clouds and almost completely overcast by evening. Had a pretty good rain shower come through about 5:45. I went by myself, put the boat in at Lunker Landing, and went across to the north side of Long Point. I got a couple of bass in coves there on a floating rapala. The rapala bite was pretty hit and miss, so I ended up anchoring out and working an unweighted plastic worm through the rocky areas. Got some really nice fish doing that. Weighed several, they weighed 2lb 8oz, 3lb 11oz, and 3lb 4oz. Took a picture of the 3lb 11oz one. (see it here.) Late in the day, some coves had some active bass in them, and they were hitting rapala's. Lots of action today.. broke off 5 fish, all on plastic worm. Total caught- 15.
April 26- Overcast, cold, raining most of the time, light variable breeze except just before a thunderstorm passed. I went by myself, and went toward Lost Creek Cove. I caught a few on the way there, one on plastic worm in the rocks, and 2 more on floating rapala. Once in the cove, I fished on trees and rocks until the rain really got going, then I pulled up and hunkered down while a t-storm passed. I decided to move back around nearer to the boat ramp to be close enough to leave if the t-storms continued, but they didn't, so I fished until I got pretty wet. The plastic worm in the rocks really worked the best, I had plenty of action, fish were almost predictable. I ended up leaving early, wet and cold. Fish today were really nice, weighed one at 2lb 2oz. Most nearly that size, but I did catch a tiny one the same size as my rapala. Total caught- 12.
April 27- Mostly cloudy, but enough sun came through to make it better than yesterday. Snow showers on and off, windy from the SW, cold. Went by myself and put in at Lunker Landing. Fished back toward the Pioneer cabin, planning on anchoring out and working the plastic worm through the rocky spots. I did just that, but didn't have much luck. I did get a 2lb+ bass on a white spinnerbait in the rocks, but try as I might, I couldn't get another. Fish wanted the worm moving real slow, and they are moved out from shore a little. I kept trying a rapala in the coves everytime I came to one, and it finally paid off late in the day. I got a real nice bass 3lbs, 8oz on a rapala in the last cove I fished. Right after that I got another that was close to 2lb. Both hit the rapala as it was stopped, but before it came back up. Cold day, but I was dressed for it and didn't get too cold. Total for the day- 8.
April 29- Overcast, rain showers, light variable breeze, stronger around showers, cold. Went by myself and fished from shore. I caught a couple of fish at the first place I stopped, over near the Pioneer Cabin. One of those was about 3 lbs, couldn't weigh it because I forgot my scale. I did get a picture of it though, see it here. It was slow, but the general size of the fish made up for it, most of them were over 1½ lbs, although I did catch a couple under that. Dragging a plastic worm in the rocks was what needed to happen, but I also got a couple (the smaller ones) dragging it through the bottom of a cove. Had to move the worm real slow, but they were biting when you got it in front of them. Didn't get a hit on a rapala, but didn't throw it much either. All in all, not a bad day, a little wet, but that's the way it is when it rains. Total fish caught- 7. Broke off 4.
April 30- Partly cloudy early, increasing clouds to completely overcast and rain/snow showers by afternoon. Cold and windy from SW. Went by myself and started at Long Point on the south side. Caught a fish the first place I tried, on a plastic worm. After that, I went and tried rocks up near the head of the cove that were almost too deep to see. Caught a 3lb 12oz bass on those, then a few more on similar rocks. When I left there, I went back toward the dam, but the wind made it almost impossible to fish alot of the good area's. I was able to get some more fish, sometimes by anchoring out, mostly out away from shore. Finished off the day over near the boat ramp, fishing basically the same deep rock pattern. During the course of the day I weighed 2 more fish, they both weighed 2lb 14oz. Several others were in the 2 lb catagory. Total caught today- 11.
May 1- Overcast early, clearing in the afternoon, quite a bit of sun. Warmer because of the sun, and fairly light variable breeze. Went by myself and put in at the Picnic area. I originally wanted to go to the west, but when I rounded the point, there was a pretty good breeze blowing from the west, so I decided to work my way to the east. I caught my first fish shortly after, fishing a plastic worm in the rocks. It weighed 3lb 2oz. I ended up working my way around the point into Lost Creek Cove, where I spent most of the day. I caught most of my fish either in deeper water, or adjacent to deep water. The deep rock pattern from yesterday was still working. There were some spots I just cast it out in the middle, and I would get bit dragging that worm slowly along the bottom. I caught one fish in about 3 feet of water, in a shallow cove, but most of them were in deeper area's. Weighed another of the larger ones, it weighed 2lb 7oz. Pretty good day, but I had to wear coveralls to stay warm. Total caught today- 15.
May 6- Partly cloudy, but mostly sunny. Warm and windy from the SW. Went by myself and put the boat in at Lunker Landing. I fished the north side of Long Point first, catching some nice ones and some small ones. The smaller fish are in now, and about half of the fish I caught today were fairly small. I started off having better luck with the plastic worm, but as the day progressed, the rapala started getting better action. I caught a really nice bass on the rapala over in the cove next to the Pioneer Cabin. She took it on a stop and wait retrieve. Found another cove later on that I caught 9 fish in, mostly on rapala. Plastic worm thrown up on the shore, then dragged into the water and skimming the surface brought some good top water action. Fishing improved later in the day, but the wind got stronger too, and made fishing some areas impossible. Came home about an hour early due to the wind, but had a pretty good day. Weighed 2 fish, 2lb 11oz, and 2lb 2oz. Also caught several others around 2lb. Total caught today- 19.
May 19- Mostly cloudy but a little sun came through while I was eating lunch. Windy from the south. Went to Lost Cr. Cove mostly to get out of the wind. Caught a couple of fish there, mostly under weed mats on plastic worms. Tried Rapala and spinnerbait in the rocks, no takers. Didn't see any sunfish, but I did see some bedding bass. Later in the day, I tried fishing in the newly emerging grass along shore, and got some good action buzzing a worm along the surface. Caught a 2 lb bass doing that. Wind was really strong, so I left early and went and picked some Morels. Total caught today- 5.
May 27- Partly cloudy, windy from the SW, but more from the south, warm enough, but the wind kept it cool. Went by myself as usual, and fished the island near the boat ramp first. Caught a couple of small bass and a crappie there. Got the bass on rapala, fishing shady spots, and the crappie on a jig... watched him take it. Went over to the tip of Long Point next and fished back toward the Pioneer Cabin. Caught a nice bass on a rapala over there, and a few small ones. Fished some rocks with a jig and bobber and caught a couple of crappie and a real nice bass. The bass was a surprise, I thought I hooked a monster crappie. Went across to Lunker and worked my way back up toward the boat ramp. Caught a couple of 3 lb bass (OK, one weighed 2lb 15oz. didn't weigh the other) on plastic worm fishing in real close to shore. Saw a couple of bass either making a nest, or doing some spawning thing... they wouldn't hit. Lots of people, some jet ski's, some real stupid people running their boat into ground at one point... that's what I get for going on a holiday. I did get quite a few fish though, and the 4 good ones made it a pretty good day. Total fish counted today- 14 (Caught some real small ones I didn't even count. Probably 4 or 5 were crappie.)
June 3- Partly cloudy, warm, a little breeze out of the west mostly. Linda and I went over to the tip of Long Point first, and worked back to the east on the south side of the point. I got a couple of nice bass on rapala, and we also caught some smaller ones and a pretty good crappie on the same bait. Linda got the crappie. We went across to the south side of the lake next, and worked back to the west. We caught quite a few smallmouth, more of them than largemouth, actually. Finished off the day in the coves on both sides of the boat ramp. We saw some good fish in shallow, saw some beds, but didn't see any bass actually on beds... they may be done spawning. All in all a pretty good day, several of my fish were 1½ to 2 lb. All caught on rapala. Total, Me- 18 Linda- 9.
June 10- Partly cloudy, but mostly sunny. Cool and windy from the north east. Went with my cousin Bob and his son Ryan. We went over to the tip of Long Point and worked back toward the Pioneer Cabin. Try as we might, the fish just weren't cooperating. The cold weather of the last few days has slowed things down considerably. We saw some good bass, but the ones we saw weren't biting. I even had trouble getting the sunfish to bite a jig... couldn't, in fact. I did manage to catch a couple of decent bass, not too big, but bigger than all the others we caught. Got those on Rapala. Bob got a couple of little ones, but Ryan didn't get any. Today was a good example of what effect cold weather this time of year has on the fishing.
July 21- Partly to mostly cloudy, thunderstorms in the afternoon. Linda and I went to the boat ramp to put the boat in, but there was a line there, so we put the boat in at the Picnic area. We went across the cove to a small beach where we could go swimming. After that, the thunder sent us in to shore a couple of times, but we did manage to catch a few fish on rapala's. They were all small bass, smallmouth and largemouth, but Linda did get one large red ear. I got a couple of good hits dragging a plastic worm across the weeds, and hooked one of them.. a small bass. We left early. Total fish caught... me-7 Linda-7.
August 11- Clear, hot, some breeze from the SW, but not too much. Linda and I fished the south side, working up toward the dam. We spent quite a bit of time laying on the beach and swimming, but did manage to catch a few fish. Most of our fish caught on rapala, but I got one on a plastic worm in the weeds. Didn't see any big ones, or catch any of those, but had fun catching the smaller ones. A beautiful day, not too hot, but hot enough that the water felt great, and just enough breeze to keep it comfortable. Total fish caught, me- 6 Linda- 20.
August 25- Clear, breezy from the west, cool, at least cool enough that we didn't want to go swimming. Linda and I went across to the north side of Long Point and worked back toward the Pioneer Cabin. We fished the outer edges of the weeds mostly, and caught lots of small fish. Most of the ones we caught were real small, but I did catch a couple of bigger ones, the largest was about 3/4 of a pound. (mostly largemouth, but some redear and I got one crappie) I used a small spinnerbait mostly, but did also catch some on a rapala. Linda used a jig mostly, and also a small rapala. Later in the day the action is some of the coves was intense, too bad the fish weren't bigger. It was a nice day anyway, total fish caught me- 61, Linda- 77.
