Eagle Lake

I fished Eagle Lake for alot of years before I learned how to consistently catch Eagle Lake Trout. I prefer to use jigs, which I make myself, and hang them under a small bobber to take advantage of wave action to make them look life like. I usually use 1/32 oz. jig heads, or smaller, seemingly inconsistent with the size of the fish there. Colors seem to vary from year to year, but I am pretty confident in olive and gray combinations. Of course, with any fishing situation, you tend to fish lures you are confident with much better than if you are trying to figure out what to change to. Light wire jig hooks get bent out of shape easily, and will break when reshaped too many times. The jig pictured here was one I broke the hook on after catching several fish on it.

Line size does seem to make a difference, the lightest line you can get by with is the best. I prefer to use 6 lb. Magnathin, having experimented with lighter lines, I was breaking off way too many fish, or they were taking too long to land. Lighter line will allow longer casts also, although many times the fish are quite near shore and long casts are unnecessary. Even though I have a small boat, I usually stay off the lake during the most productive times of the year, September through December, and fish from shore. Eagle Lake can be dangerous for small boats due to the open expanse and wave generation potential it creates.

Fishing from shore can be extremely good even though sometimes the most challenging part of my fishing day can be getting to the lake. The highway on the North side of the lake, highway 139, is open year round as well as access to the North shore where most residents live. The South end is another story, access from Susanville is tricky after the county quits plowing the road in mid November. Travel time from Susanville is about 1/2 hour when the road is dry.
