The 13th U.S. at Vicksburg
Immediately above the cannon barrel is the point on Stockade Redan where the 13th U.S. became the first federal infantry unit to plant its flags on Vicksburg's earthworks, May 19, 1863.
This marker was placed at the 13th U.S.'s jumping off point for its May 19th assault.
This plaque is in memory of Captain Edward C. Washington, commander of the 13th at Vicksburg, being mortally wounded in the battle for Stockade Redan
