Immediately above the cannon barrel is the point on Stockade Redan where the 13th U.S. became the first federal infantry unit to plant its flags on Vicksburg's earthworks, May 19, 1863.
This marker was placed at the 13th U.S.'s jumping off point for its May 19th assault.
