Flounder

Common Names
Some people call them Sole but they are from a different family.
Description
The Flounder are all relatively bottom-dwelling fish with both eyes on the same side of the body (in adults). Flounder alter their color to suit the bottom on which they are lying. Most are brown, sandy or a light khaki to green, and are usually overlaid with darker spots. The belly is always white, cream, creamy-yellow.
Size
The average line-caught Flounder measures approx. 30-35cm and weighs from 0.3-0.8 kilos.
Habitat
They prefer mud, sand, or fine gravel bottom areas in tidal rivers and estuaries. They are also found in bays and inshore areas.
Feeding
Flounder are opportunistic predators and scavengers. They feed on small fish, prawns, crabs, marine worms, octopus and small squid.
Fishing Techniques
They are voracious hunters and will take large baits into their tooth-lined mouth. Most are caught on prawn, worms, yabbies, and nippers, fresh fish, squid. Tackle should include 2/0 hooks and 2.0-6.0 kilo fishing line.
Eating
The flesh is white, moist and sweet. However in small Flounder, the bones can be a problem.
