Taking a Tour
Kaua'i is the one Hawaiian island that's mostly dedicated to outdoor activities. There's hiking, camping (goes with some of the hikes), bike-riding, snorkeling, and other beach-assorted activities - not to mention the touristy activities of helicopter rides & assorted boat trips. The island has about 4 different climates for each side. The northern end of the island rains - a LOT - and is somewhat cooler than the rest of the island. The eastern side of the island is a bit drier, but is also warmer - it rains maybe half as much as the northern part. The southern end of the island gets at least one 15 minute bout of rain a day that dries up within 5 or so minutes - so, less rain & warmer. The western side of Kaua'i is practically inaccessible & is the island's desert area.
A word (or more) of advice? Unless you're planning on only hiking and biking or staying within walking distance of where you're staying, you are going to need to rent a car to see the island. When renting - CHECK THE VEHICLE FOR COCKROACHES!!! (It doesn't matter what vehicle you get, check it for roaches.) If you have a lizard or 2 in the car with you, don't worry about it - they eat the roaches.
