CEDAR DECK INSTALLED IN 2001

The old deck simply had to go. It had been about 10 years since I flipped the bench seats over to impress visitors! It rained during the visit and nobody ever sat on it! Anyway, the fir was splintering and was very beat up and discoloured, especially where the BBQ sat.  It was also too small for our liking. People were constantly bumping into each other. If we weren't going to expand the kitchen then we should at least expand the deck. Cedar became the wood of choice and Sikkens Cetol the coating.

The original fir deck was coated with a solid stain that weathered off in one winter. The following summer I removed every plank, sanded them and coated it with Sikkens Cetol.

Here is the extra extension over the back porch that added so much to the deck. Walking on the same level is so much easier than having to negotiate a step down and back up to the door. By screwing the planks down I can occasionally lift them to remove the leaves that collect under.

Blue jays sure find food fast. This one can't see me through the glass patio door which makes photography a little easier.
