Trails of the Diablo Valley

This site is dedicated to the fabulous trails of the Diablo Valley. An outdoor enthusiast's paradise, with more than 100,000 acres of public land and over 1000 miles of trails, the opportunities for running, hiking and enjoying nature are endless. Located 25 miles east of San Francisco and bounded by the Oakland/Berkeley Hills to the west, the Carquinez Strait to the north, the Diablo Range to the east and the Sunol Grade to the south, the Diablo Valley is blessed with a variety of trails to explore.

For information on ratings and a complete listing of all trails see:

If you would like to Rate Your Favorite Trail please fill out this form and your favorite trail will be added to this site. Even if your trail is outside of the Bay Area please submit it anyway. I am planning to add a section on the Great Trails of the U.S. (or the World if there is interest).
General Information

Conditions:
The trails in these areas can range from narrow, rocky singletrack to wide, graded fire roads. The trail composition ranges from sandy to hardpacked clay. During wet weather the trails are generally quite muddy. Depending on the area and the soil composition, it may take as much as a week or more for some trails to dry out after it rains. During spring, and particularly summer, it can get quite hot. While some areas have limited water availability, usually only at selected entrances, you should bring your own. Daytime temperatures range from the 70s up to 100 degrees in the spring and summer. Fall and winter, which is the rainy season, are usually mild with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. As some areas are quite large, it is possible to go many miles from the trailhead. If you are planning a trip into one of the more remote regions you should advise someone of your plans and time of anticipated return. Always carry the supplies and equipment necessary for your outing.

Dogs:
Unless otherwise noted dogs are allowed off leash as long as they are under voice and sight control. Always clean up after your dog and dispose of the waste in a trash can. Some areas provide dog litter bags, but it is a good idea to bring your own. Please obey all rules governing dogs and be considerate of other users so that these areas continue to be dog accessible.

Bicycles:
Bicycles are permitted in all areas unless otherwise noted. They are restricted to trails of at least eight feet in width in all areas. In a few instances bicycles may be permitted on singletrack trails, but only if that trail is specifically posted as open to bicycles. Always check at the entrances to find out the rules for an area and follow them so that bicycles may continue to have access to these areas.
