"Probably because they needed to create a static-free environment first," you say. "Otherwise, the magnetic fields generated by all of the static electricity in the air would always be erasing disks."
"Yes, and if they've created a static-free lab to experiment with, that means there's someplace we can go to escape the interference and read the timer."
