Born in Devon in 1955.
Robert was a chorister at Hereford Cathedral and later studied at the Royal College of Music, where his teachers included Stephen Savage and Bernard Stevens. During his student days he also joined the group Songs for Our Society which Cornelius Cardew was then running at Goldsmiths College.
After leaving the RCM he began to earn a living as a musician for dance, eventually becoming Head of Music at the Laban Centre, where he has taught and played for many years.
