Henry entered Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, in January 1863 at the age of 12, and left the school in 1868. He matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, on 19 Oct. 1867 at the age of 17; he was a demy of the college [which may mean he held a scholarship or exhibition] until 1872, but I have no record of a degree. He became a schoolmaster in New South Wales and died in 1935.

On 1 July 1916, supported by a French attack to the south, thirteen divisions of Commonwealth forces launched an offensive on a line from north of Gommecourt to Maricourt. Despite a preliminary bombardment lasting seven days, the German defences were barely touched and the attack met unexpectedly fierce resistance. Losses were catastrophic and with only minimal advances on the southern flank, the initial attack was a failure. In the following weeks, huge resources of manpower and equipment were deployed in an attempt to exploit the modest successes of the first day. However, the German Army resisted tenaciously and repeated attacks and counter attacks meant a major battle for every village, copse and farmhouse gained. At the end of September, Thiepval was finally captured. The village had been an original objective of 1 July. Attacks north and east continued throughout October and into November in increasingly difficult weather conditions. The Battle of the Somme finally ended on 18 November with the onset of winter. In the spring of 1917, the German forces fell back to their newly prepared defences, the Hindenburg Line, and there were no further significant engagements in the Somme sector until the Germans mounted their major offensive in March 1918. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial. The memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was built between 1928 and 1932 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales, in the presence of the President of France, on 31 July 1932. The dead of other Commonwealth countries who died on the Somme and have no known graves are commemorated on national memorials elsewhere.

Location: Esquelbecq is a village near the Belgian frontier, 24 kilometres north of Hazebrouck and the same distance south of Dunkirk. The Military Cemetery is about one kilometre west of the village, 200 metres south of the road to Zeggers-Cappel.
Two British soldiers were buried in the West corner of the Communal Cemetery in 1916 and 1917; the Military Cemetery was not opened until April, 1918, when the German Offensive in Flanders had begun and the 2nd Canadian and 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Stations came to Esquelbecq. The Cemetery was closed in September 1918; but a French Colonial soldier was buried in it in February 1919, and the body of a British soldier who died in 1916 was brought in from an isolated grave. The 42 American graves in Plot V (to the West of Plot III), dating from June to September, 1918, were removed after the Armistice. There are now over 600, 1914-18 and nearly 50, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, 30 from the 1939-45, whose graves could not be precisely located are commemorated by special memorials inscribed "Buried near this spot". The cemetery covers an area of 2,520 square metres.

Grave Reference/ Panel Number: Panel 11.
Location: This Memorial overlooks the River Thames on Cooper's Hill at Englefield Green between Windsor and Egham on the A308, 4 miles from Windsor.
The Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede commemorates by name over 20,000 airmen who were lost in the Second World War during operations from bases in the United Kingdom and North and Western Europe, and who have no known graves. They came from all parts of the Commonwealth and some were from countries in continental Europe which had been over-run but whose airmen continued to fight in the ranks of the Royal Air Force. The memorial, designed by Sir Edward Maufe, is in the form of a cloister with the names of the dead, grouped by year, inscribed on the Hadene stone reveals and mullions of the narrow windows. On the cloister ceilings are emblazoned the arms of the Commonwealth countries. The cloisters have curved wings, terminating in two look-outs, one facing towards Windsor Castle and the other towards Heathrow Airport. The structure is in Portland stone with roofs of Westmorland green slate.
