BOOKS OF THE SKEPTICAL MOVEMENT

Harry Houdini

The most famous illusionist and escape artist was also a notorious investigator of spiritualists, mystics, psychics and miracle workers. In this brilliant work, with an introduction by his modern counterpart James Randi, he exposes some of the more popular tricks of his time.

Carl Sagan

The Demon Haunted World tears through pseudo-science like a chainsaw. One of the most definitive promotions of rationality I've ever read.

A wonderful work on the evolution of the human brain. Not exactly a skeptical work, but I still highly reccomend it as it can help you understand much of the other works.

James "The Amazing" Randi
A stage magician who uses his knowledge of trickery to expose frauds, mystics and miracle workers of every sort.
The Magic Of Uri Geller.
This one is out of print, but if you can find a copy somehow, I suggest you do. This was on of Randi's first works in the skeptical movement, and it was the first one I read. He teaches how to do the the tricks so you can prove to believers that it's all bullshit and that makes it very valuable.

An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural:
James Randi's Decidedly Skeptical Definitions of Alternate Realities.
One of his greatest works.

Flim Flam is another one of his greatest works.

The Faith Healers is the result of James Randi's investigation of the Miracle centers and other healing ministries.

Micheal Shermer
The founder of The Skeptics Society, publisher of Skeptic Magazine, a highly respected academic and agnostic.

How We Believe is a study of the human instinct to believe without evidence and the psychological causes of religious devotion.

Why People Believe Wierd Things is a study of popular myths, fantastic claims and errors of logic. Well written and easily understood.

Peter Huston
Scams from the Great Beyond : How to Make Easy Money Off of Esp, Astrology, Ufos, Crop Circles, Cattle Mutilations, Alien Abductions, Atlantis, channelling, etc.
Kind of a lame book in many ways, but still pretty good.
