STORY:
Version 1.0:
This started out in 1995 during the Cal weekender. That's when SC students go up to Frisco for the weekend, chill, and then watch as the Trojans murder the Bears. So I've got this enormous itch to go to Chinatown, and my only opportunity is when everyone else wants to eat. Well, back then I was a resourceful little bugger (I'm still resourceful, just wiser :) and set off on my own. I'm in and out of the shops faster than you can say *short phrase of your choice here*, looking for a red Kung Fu shirt with white frogs (like costume for Ranma) or a Green one with white frogs (because green's my favorite color).
So I realize that I'm starting to get pressed for time, needing to reach the BART (or Frisco Area Rapid Transit as my uncle and I call it :) and I hit one store, now willing to buy a black Kung Fu outfit. And then I see women's clothing. And I look at the shirts. And this pink thing catches my eye. I don't know what it was, but there was something about this shirt. Let's try a large... I think to myself, and *gack* NEED TO BREATHE...*turning blue*. OK, this is NOT going to work...I think I'll try an EXTRA large... and it's a little tight but at least I'm not dying.
I made it to the game halfway through the first quarter, much to everyone's surprise. We ended up winning, 26-16. But that's another story for another time. Next up is Halloween 1996, and I decide to wear my shirt and go drag. I roll some socks up in a t-shirt (A bra? No way! I'm not spending money on one of those!!), slap some makeup on and I'm out the door, fooling all of my friends. It's a big hit, and there might be a picture of it somewhere out there.
Fast forward to 1998. It's been a while since I've cross-dressed, and I'm not obsessed with it, but it's fun to do from time to time. So P-chan is recruiting me for AGSMA, telling me that we're going to do South Wars. He also tells me that he and some friends went in 1995 as Ranma and company. So the wheels start turning in my devious little mind and I say something like...why don't we do Ranma for walkaround, only with a female Ranma this time? And he thinks it's an excellent idea...when was the last time he did P-Chan after all?
So I head down for the Con, and, with P. Kuno and I being turned away from volunteering for the day (Grrr...) we go wig-hunting and find a beautiful red wig for around $50. The next day, it takes around an hour and a half to get ready because the wig is as of yet unbraided, I haven't put on makeup in a while, and because we woke up later than expected. But everything worked out OK. Trunks went as a borrowed Kunou Tatewaki, Ucchan and P-Chan as themselves. We had plenty of requests for photos, and Viz gave me a free pin because while we were all cosplaying, I was the only one crossdressed. I got numerous cat calls and was stared at by certain Convention workers who will remain nameless.
Version 2.0
Version 2.0 was thought up during SDCC 1998 because A) I wanted to do this again in 1999 and B) I wanted to do the original Ranma shirt. Then the perfect opportunity came up with a script that called for Ranma. Since I had worn Version 1.0 the year before, and because SDCC rules state that a costume must have some part re-done if it has been seen before, I was provided with the perfect opportunity to do the original shirt. A girl can't wear the same thing twice, right? :)
So Ucchan did the fabric sewing, and I constructed the frogs and sewed them on the shirt myself. Actually, 3 were pinned on to go onstage and were later sewed on during a lonely rainy night in Monterey. And it is ready for repeated use. Although I should get some more shirts to provide for some variety. ;P
Version 2.K
Version 2.K is so labeled because it stands for Ranma-kun. It was a one-time only gig which will only be remembered in photos and on video from the 1999 SDCC Masquerade. Trunks is given partial design credit for supplying the black wig. Interesting that we used balloons for the attributes ;P , in order that I may easily switch from woman to man. Try doing that quickly onstage the OTHER way. It ain't gonna happen. The only chance you may have to see him again is in another AGSMA skit, and even then, 2.K can't appear at SDCC. Just think of this occurrance as rarer than Mew, and you'll be alright.
