Benma's Spring Splash II

I fell into that system wars BS during the Genesis/Super Nintendo days. Luckily, I fell out of it. While I didn't agree with the way Sega left the Saturn out to rot, I still bought one anyway. But I'm not going to start in the middle of the story.

I always thought that Sega had some good games, but Nintendo had better ones. So while I liked Sonic the Hedgehog and a few other Sega games, I never bought a Genesis. Next came the Saturn, and quite frankly, their first generation games stunk, so I didn't think twice about the system until some more games came out. The Playstation appeared shortly thereafter, and I got it, as well as the N64, not because of Mario or Mario Kart, but because I knew that Zelda would be coming out.

So I'm out with my friend down at Santa Monica and the Third Street Promenade. We go to Sears and I play the display game, NiGHTS Into Dreams. I'm thinking this is cool, and that I should get a Saturn.

This is about the same time that my friend is trying to get me to play Virtual On in the arcades. I'm thinking it's an OK concept, because for some reason the synapses were working slow and not making the connection that this is a 3D, ROBOT, FIGHTING game.

So in the Eleventh Hour of the Saturn, I got one, along with the two afore mentioned games and Sonic Jam. I would also get Magic Knight Rayearth, but didn't have the money for Shining Force III. Which I STILL don't have...*GRRR*. Of course that's because Sega adopted their limited release policy for the last Saturn games, as well as not releasing the second and third installments of Shining Force III. In other words, they completely cut off all ties to the system, leaving NOTHING for Sega loyals until the Dreamcast arrived. You know, you can still make money with what you have as long as you use it, but Sega just doesn't see things the way that I do.

OK so here comes the Dreamcast, with its lame name. OK, the system looks great, and the amount of games is better than Nintendo for this stage in the game, but worse than Sony. But still, while the games look great, only a few are worth purchasing. Sonic Adventure, Soul Caliber, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Dead Or Alive 2, which just came out, and the yet to be released Street Fighter III. The rest are good diversions, but are only necessary if you have cash floating around. At least it doesn't look like they'll make the same mistakes they did with the Saturn, although with the DVD drive coming out soon, they may just have another Sega CD or 32X on their hands. So we'll see. I think that they've righted the ship. For the most part.
