PREPARATION TIME: 1 hour (mostly hair).
POWERS GAINED:
1. Sphereshot (f--- yeah!).
2. I get to pose for pictures with total babes (Yuna, Lulu, Rikku).
3. Quite possibly the best Tidus ever...outside of the actual game itself.
4. DON'T piss off they guy with the big 4 lb. wooden sword...
5. LOTS of fangirls.
DRAWBACKS:
1. Actually attempting the Sphereshot would fall on my ass, or worse...
2. Not all the people I pose with are cute and of legal age...
3. This bastard cost serious money and time to put together as the best Tidus ever.
4. It's not like I can actually SWING the 4 lb. wooden sword...
5. Lots of fangirls!
STORY:
I AM PROUD TO PRESENT MY NEW FLAGSHIP COSTUME!!!
ANIME EXPO 2002. I saw a BUNCH of shit Tidus cosplayers running around, and I took the pictures to prove it. The leg thing is almost touching their sock/shoe, their armpiece is crap, they have the flimsiest hood I've ever seen, don't have the right shoes, right hair, they're out of shape, they're white as a ghost...you name a fault, I guarantee one or more will apply to every Tidus cosplayer I saw at AX 02.
So, having beaten FFX the week before AX, it is my new favorite Final Fantasy. Tidus is the most kick-ass character I've ever seen. And a bunch of lazy two-bit cosplayers are going to ruin my perception of how Tidus is supposed to look in real life? I don't think so.
So the project to build a better Tidus began, and I learned exactly why 95% of all other Tidus costumes are total trash.
So let's try to get this thing together for an AX NY debut. Good luck. I get some stuff done, such as the biker shorts and the BLITZBALL! in time for Comic Con, and the leg weave almost completed by the time AX NY rolls around. So that didn't happen. At this point, I'm at about 35-40 completion percentage for Tidus.
Well, I put it away in September, figuring to get a job and get back to it a little bit later, when college football season was over. I made a schedule, one item per month, and started work on the sword in January. Most of the actual woodworking of it gets done, but I get sidetracked by Xenosaga, Zelda OoT Master Quest, Wind Waker and Pokemon RS.
Well, it's now April, and if I don't get really get working on the costume, I won't get it finished. So I start him up again somewhere in late April, using Greenwood as a means to show off completed parts (and give some sort of deadline factor). I complete the leg weave, show off the sword, and bring the gauntlet apparatus to meetings or the end of the year party. And I'm moving finally.
But not quite fast enough.
Can't buy leather shorts. Okaasan makes them. I'm doing more work, but with a week left I won't be able to do two major pieces. So I enlist her help again, and the bases for the shirt and overalls get completed. I finish the work I can do in a short amount of time, and it's finally complete enough for an AX debut.
Down in San Diego for Comic Con, P. Kuno did my glove for me (VERY difficult to get in and out of, but otherwise perfect), and I was ready for Con, sort of.
The details will be found in the Comic Con 2003 Journals, but I got on the masquerade waiting list on Thursday, got into the Masquerade on Friday, and "Too Sexy Tidus" on his Blitzball World Tour was born.
Eventually I'm going to have to buy a wig for this costume, because my hair is too long for everyday wear (especially during the convention season in SUMMER. But it is currently cut properly, and have color gel for the hair (although I really wouldn't mind dying it ^_^).
But...can you believe that certain people said I should compete in Mini-Masquerade at this year's AX with Tidus? I am NOT going to use up the eligibility of my FLAGSHIP COSTUME on a quasi-masquerade. Nothing less than the whole shebang for Tidus. Just like at SDCC 2003. ^_^
TWO YEARS LATER...
I have since moved to Japan to continue the Tidus World Tour, and not to pad my own ego, but Tidus holds its own against the supposedly superior Japanese cosplayers. I should someday see myself on the wall of fame at Mandarake. ;p
NOTES/TRIVIA:
I actually started work on the APOCALYPSE sword, but moved to Japan and it only exists as a frame...This costume took 5 months to construct and cost $350...This costume was deemed too good and banned from the Greenwood Film Society Halloween Cosplay Contest...And unfortunately, I have not made a costume since Tidus was finished. But that will soon change!
