NOTES:
* BIRTHDAY WISHES - Chicago Bears chairman of the board Ed McCaskey
celebrates his 82nd birthday on Friday, April 27th, 2001.
* CLINIC - The
Chicago Bears will hold their 13th annual Coaches Clinic on
April 29-30. This year's clinic, coordinated by the Bears Assistant
Director of Pro Personnel George Paton, will be held at the Sheraton North
Shore in Northbrook. The event is free of charge and features presentations
by college and pro coaches. The clinic serves as a thank you from the
Bears' player personnel department and coaching staff to all the schools for
their help throughout the year.
* EUROPE LEAGUE
UPDATE - Chicago Bears receiver Ahmad Merritt opened the
2001 NFL Europe season in spectacular fashion with a league-high 137
receiving yards last Saturday, April 21. The native Chicagoan averaged 22.8
yards per catch on six receptions for the Berlin Thunder in a 21-14,
season-opening loss to the Barcelona Dragons. Bryan Edwards started and was
among the team leaders for Franfurt with three catches for 25 yards with a
long play of 17 yards. Todd McMillon also garnered a starting assignment
and recorded four tackles, including three solos and a sack. Gerald
Williams made a positive showing for the Claymores by hauling in three
catches for 17 yards and a touchdown in reserve action. Bears center Brad
Williams was also in action and started at left guard for the Amsterdam
Admirals in their 24-20 loss to the Rhein Fire, the team that current Bear
Marcus Robinson led to the 1998 NFL Europe championship.
* BEARS CARE GALA - The sixth annual Bears Care Gala fund-raiser will be
held Friday, May 11th at 7 pm at the Chicago Ritz-Carlton. Proceeds from
the event benefit breast and ovarian cancer research and treatment programs
at Cook County Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the Brian
Piccolo Cancer Research Fund at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center.
* PHOTO-OP - Bears wide receivers Bobby Engram and Marcus Robinson will
participate in a photo shoot Friday after the 3:05 pm practice with children
from metro-Chicago YMCAs to promote the Bears' youth football programs,
including Punt, Pass and Kick and the NFL's Flag Football.
* FIELD CONSTRUCTION
- The North River Commission and New City YMCA will
split a $190,000 grant provided by the NFL and the Chicago Bears as part of
the "Community Football Fields Program." Glyn Milburn and Bryan Robinson
will present the check on Wednesday, May 2 at 2:30 pm at the North Park
University football field.
* PLATTEVILLE-BOUND
- The Bears will report for their 18th and final
training camp in Platteville, Wis., on Thursday, July 19. Two-a-day
practices begin on Friday, July 20 with camp set to close on Sunday, Aug.
12. Specific practice times for Platteville will be announced later.
* NEW CHEESEHEADS
- In addition to the six Bear draftees and 12 undrafted
free agents, the following 19 players have never participated in Platteville
training camp: Baxter, Bell, Boone, Brady, Coleman, Edwards, Howard, Maxie,
Maynard, Newkirk, Powell, Sheldon, Sinceno, Traylor, Wallace, Washington,
Whigman, G. Williams and Wise.
