Jeff's Review of:
A Knight's Tale

May 11, 2001

2001, 2 hrs 5 min., Rated PG-13 for action violence, some nudity and brief sex-related dialogue.Dir: Brian Helgeland. Cast: Heath Ledger (William Thatcher), Shannyn Sossamon (Jocelyn), Mark Addy (Roland), Paul Bettany (Geoffrey Chaucer), Alan Tudyk (Wat), Laura Fraser (Kate), Rufus Sewell (Adhemar), Leagh Conwell (Young William).

I weighed it, I measured it, and I did not find it wanting. Yes, that's adapted from a common thread in the film, and means that I think A Knight's Tale is a good summer popcorn flick. A movie that knows what it means to get medieval on your ass, it's got all the necessary elements: action, romance & poetry, humor, music (even it's from the 1970s and 80s), lovable pals, devilish bad guys, heartfelt moments...it's the almost-perfect summer compilation film.

Heath Ledger's a budding superstar and will be the biggest draw for sure, but even as a macho man I had a good time and am convinced he will have girls swooning for some time. The girl he fancies may be an Angelina Jolie wannabe, but she's charming (although a bit demanding) and his band of merry men (and women) is full of characters that are - as usual - not developed but provide a fine balance for Ledger. Even writer Geoffrey Chaucer has a significant role as one of Ledgers friends and aides, providing some flowery language in announcing his knight before the joust, and helping put to words what his friend feels for the fair lady.

Its not often you see jousting in movies, so that was a nice change. Just as Gladiator resurrected the Colosseum and the drama in the ring, so does A Knights Tale bring forth some of the festivities of the crowds cheering on their noblemen with the lances. Director Brian Helgeland shows the tournament in terms a modern audience relates, like a football game. Theres plenty of music, food, spirits, dance, barechested men bumping chests and even the wave busts loose. Sure some of the scenes are silly, but whats wrong with that in a movie that clearly wants you to have a good time?

Don't worry, also, when the film incorporates some of those elements from two decades ago (such as clapping at the Joust to We Will Rock You and dancing like Fame rejects). Just have fun, and you'll let it go. Heck, those might even be your favorite parts.

The verdict: -- It will rock you.
