Jeff's Review of:
The Others

June 7, 2002

2001, 1 hr 40 min., Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and frightening moments. Dir: Alejandro Amenbar. Cast: Nicole Kidman (Grace Stewart), Alakina Mann (Anne Stewart), James Bentley (Nicholas Stewart), Christopher Eccleston (Charles Stewart), Fionnula Flanagan (Ms. Bertha Mills), Eric Sykes (Mr. Edmund Tuttle), Elaine Cassidy (Lydia).

I don't normally review movies that I rent, since new releases are more on the public's mind and more likely to perk interest. But The Others is one I'd wanted to see on the big screen but never got the chance. So, in this brief look, I want to pass on that it is worth the time to seek out at the video store.

There was some superb acting from all involved. I've never been a Nicole Kidman fan, but I'll admit a premature assertion because she was GOOD here. Likewise, the kids fit right in, from the bratty daughter to the paranoid younger brother, and Ms. Mills is so authoritative yet mysterious she just screams "Pay attention to me."

I, and Sydney beside me, couldn't help but note the camera work, the way it changed angles and would come at the actors from above or below, shooting at odd angles to enhance the eeriness. Very well done, indeed.

Great ending; leaves me wanting to know more. I'm chock full of intriguing questions.

You think you know, but you don't know. You know?

I do know this: The Others is well worth the rental and one of the best movies of 2001.

The verdict:
