Jeff's Review of:

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Aug. 21, 2002

2002, 1 hr 30 min., Rated PG for sensuality and language.Dir: Joel Zwick. Cast: Nia Vardalos (Fortoula 'Toula' Portokalos), John Corbett (Ian Miller), Michael Constantine (Gus Portokalos), Lainie Kazan (Maria Portokalos), Andrea Martin (Aunt Voula), Louis Mandylor (Nicolas 'Nick' Portokalos).

Do you want a fun movie that will leave a smile on your face for the rest of the day? Then I present you My Big Fat Greek Wedding, an incredibly cute culture comedy meaning a southern European family (as the title suggests these are Greek) brimming with colorful personalities.

PLOT: 30-year-old Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) lives at home, works at the family restaurant and lives a lonely, single life. Her family pushes her to find a nice Greek boy to settle down with, all the while unsure that shes attractive enough to find anyone (especially as her pop constantly says she looks old). After some independence and a make-over, along comes Ian (John Corbett of Sex and the City) to sweep her off her feet.

The picture happily moves along at a steady pace, needing no push and never getting bogged down. Im particularly pleased the filmmaker didnt feel the need to have either the bride or groom have a crisis of cold feet. The writer, Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the play that became this movie, knows that she has created a fun movie and the audience just wants to tag along for the ride. No unnecessary drama needed.

Im not even sure what else to write. Seriously, Ive been holding on to this for two days, wondering if I should add something else. I dont have to. Its a great little flick, and everyone is so likable yet it doesnt feel cheesy. Just see it already.

The verdict:
