2002, 1 hr 40 min., Rated G.Dir: Michael Lembeck. "Jolly SWM with rosy cheeks, bowl full of jelly, loves kids, plays with toys, seeks SF willing to put on extra pounds and fulfill contract. Cookie-baking a plus."
That's right, boys and girls, our generous bearded man from the North Pole has to find a Mrs. Clause!
With the vibrant colors, cool magical gadgets, funny reindeer and children out the wazoo on screen (er, sorry, 'elves'), the sequel to the 1994 blockbuster is much more for the kids than the original. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does make part two merely entertaining fluff, and thus mostly forgettable.
While the original was a great, wholesome, funny flick that grown-ups and kiddies both enjoyed, really only the little ones will love the second edition. Although, it's an amusing concept to have the Council of Legendary Figures convening (made up of the Tooth Fairy, Father Time, Mother Nature, the Easter Bunny, Cupid and the Sandman). Especially when the Tooth Fairy wants to change his name to The Molinator! I say go with The Great Enameled One.
That's not to say adults won't have a good time. You will. I did. And Tim Allen certainly had a blast, because not only did he get to play a thin St. Nick in our world, but also a plastic despot St. Nick terrorizing the North Pole with oversized toy soldiers. Not to mention that Allen gets to woo the adorable Elizabeth Mitchell, who I want to hold and smooch even when she's the just the evil principal at the beginning.
Besides, the movie has Judge Reinhold. Right there, you can't speak negatively of it; order in the courtroom, here comes the Judge! Sheesh, I haven't had the joy of Judge on the screen since ... well, the original Santa Clause.
Sure, SC2 is nothing that will leave you with universal questions afterwards, but it will provide many giggles and leaves a big grin on your face in the end. I'll take that any day of the week, and twice on Sundays. Hooray for the Holidays!
The verdict:
